Do you know why? Because there was none! A whole movie without songs and it earned 250 crores. Quite a slap on the faces of people who are just selling s*x.
The echo of that slap is something I enjoyed more than the movie.
A movie I went to see with zero expectations and came out feeling like a million bucks.
Yes, yes…I’m sure there are haters hating on it and I’ll get to that as well because criticising something whether good or bad is a birthright of every Pakistani (apparently).
So what made the movie good for me?
The score. The sound effects. Every time that gandasa hit the floor and made that thud …pure satisfaction.
That one song that is carried through by every character – goosebumps.
Sitting through a whole Pakistani movie (and nowadays Indian too) and not looking at my watch even once – unusual.
Loose character
But here are the things that didn’t work for me (I can hear the haters move on the edge of their seats).
Noori Nath was not as menacing and scary as he could have been.
The character is not pure evil, the spawn of Satan, the one that breeds fear. He was just a – when provoked – good at killing. Looking like Khal Drogo, it left me wanting that sort of barbarism as well.
Maula Jatt was not the angry young man that intimidated people. He just seemed like a lost soul who was a good fighter. The want for revenge was not justified enough, and the ‘justice is in my blood‘ was…underplayed.
Maakha shown to be eccentric could have done with a little more insanity.
And Mahira Khan does not know how to act. Just wanted to put that out there. Again.
Overall, it felt like the director was holding back and it felt like I was cheated a little.
Small hiccups
Oh, and the dialogue “…menu udday de ghoray di taap sunnai deindi hai” even I know in Punjabi it’s pronounced ‘koray’.
The woman who never wears a dupatta is covered by Maulay’s shawl in the end (why you do that?)
The ominous dark shadow guy who follows Maula needs to get a life. How is his entire life’s mission to follow him AFTER declaring the kid would have a new life? Wouldn’t it have been better if he was hidden so the Natts (or Nuts) don’t find him until he is ready to avenge his family? I mean Maula accidentally becomes a fighter and now the ominous guy wants dibs?
Maybe I’m watching too much Ertugrul but there should have been a plan.
In the whole movie, I was waiting for just ONE dialogue, and it finally came right at the end.
“Jay Maulay nu Maula na marray, tey Maula nahi marda.”
Shut up and take my money!
